Google AI Mode in September 2026: Search is being folded into it

AI Mode is no longer a tab you have to choose. Over August and September 2026, Google started expanding AI Overviews into AI Mode answers, routing links into AI Mode conversations, swapping the model underneath twice, and opening AI Mode impressions in Search Console to every site. Here is everything that changed, in order, and what it means for your visibility.

TL;DR

  • — AI Overviews now open into AI Mode: since August 28 they expand into full AI Mode answers for some queries; since September 21 some of their links lead to AI Mode instead of a website.
  • — The model keeps changing: Gemini 3.7 Flash (mid-August), then 3.8 Flash (September 2) for subscribers. A 3.8 bug served answers with no citations for three days.
  • — 1 billion monthly users for AI Mode; 2.5 billion+ for AI Overviews.
  • — Measurable at last: Search Console shows AI Mode impressions for every site since August 31 — but still no clicks and no queries.
  • — Agentic: travel tools (August 27), checkout test with Flipkart in India (September 26), UCP checkout for US merchants.
  • — France: sites highly exposed to AI Overviews lost 23.1% of CTR in 9 days (Ahrefs).

2. The big shift: AI Overviews becomes a doorway into AI Mode

Until this summer, AI Overviews and AI Mode were two separate surfaces: a summary on top of the results page, and a conversational tab you had to open. Google is now merging the paths, in three moves:

  • Automatic expansion (August 28). For some queries the AI Overview unfolds into a full AI Mode-style answer, without the Show more button, with the Ask anything follow-up box loaded by default. Organic results move further down.
  • Links that stay inside Google (September 21-22). Some underlined text in AI Overviews now opens an AI Mode conversation rather than a website.
  • More sign-in prompts. AI Mode increasingly asks searchers to sign in, including by default in Incognito — which means more personalized answers.

"For some queries, AI Overviews may dynamically expand for topics where our systems determine it's most useful for people."

— Google spokesperson, August 2026. Robby Stein (VP Product, Search) added that the expansion stops if the user has already started scrolling.

There is a counter-signal: the share of AI Overviews that contain in-text links to websites rose to about 26% after September 11, according to Peec AI (sample and method undisclosed). But some of those links now lead to AI Mode, not to you — and the AI Mode queries they trigger count as neither impressions nor clicks in Search Console.

What it means: the old split — "passage optimization for AI Overviews, fan-out coverage for AI Mode" — no longer holds. Any query that triggers an AI Overview can turn into an AI Mode session. Cover the sub-questions of your topic everywhere, not only on the pages you target for AI Mode. Our step-by-step method is in How to Appear in AI Mode.

3. Which model answers — and why it matters for citations

Gemini 3.5 Flash has been the global default for AI Mode since I/O in May. Newer models now reach paying subscribers first, through the model menu in the Ask anything bar:

Model In AI Mode since Who gets it
Gemini 3.5 Flash May 19, 2026 Global default
Gemini 3.7 Flash Aug 15-17, 2026 AI Pro & Ultra, English
Gemini 3.8 Flash Sep 2, 2026 AI Pro & Ultra, worldwide

Two model swaps in three weeks is a measurement problem. When 3.8 Flash landed, some answers came back with no links or citations at all; Google called it unintended and fixed it by September 5. If your citation share moves, rule out a model change before crediting or blaming your content. Log the date, model, language and signed-in state of every manual test.

4. Measuring AI Mode: what Search Console now shows

Announced on June 3 and rolled out to all websites worldwide on August 31, 2026, the Generative AI performance report is the first first-party view of AI Mode visibility.

  • What it shows: impressions in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover's AI features, by page, country, device and date.
  • What it doesn't: clicks, CTR and queries. Sites with too few AI impressions may not see the report yet.
  • The opt-out: a property-level setting removes your content from these features — no traffic, no impressions from them — without affecting classic ranking. Training is governed separately by Google-Extended. In the UK, the CMA requires page-level controls by March 2027.

Pair that report with your analytics: AI impressions per page on one side, classic clicks on the other. The pages where impressions climb while clicks fall are the ones being read inside AI answers. Full method: Measure Your AI Visibility.

5. AI Mode goes agentic: travel, bookings, checkout

  • Travel (August 27): flight price tracking, hotel discovery and booking help, miles-and-points pricing, and Canvas for day-by-day itineraries.
  • Local services: the agentic booking announced at I/O (home repair, beauty, pet care, with the agent calling providers) targets the US first.
  • Checkout: UCP-powered checkout is open to eligible US merchants, with global expansion planned through 2026. On September 26 Google started testing a Buy button with Flipkart in India, inside Gemini and AI Mode.

The common thread: the agent reads structured data (prices, availability, service area, stock), not your prose. Merchant Center feeds and Google Business Profile are where agentic AI Mode gets its facts.

6. France: the first numbers

Ahrefs published the first measurement on August 17, 2026: 963 of the 1,000 French domains with the most clicks, 28 days before July 22 compared with 9 days after.

  • Median across all sites: -5.7% CTR and -8.8% clicks.
  • Sites where more than 20% of queries trigger an AI Overview: -23.1% CTR (-24.8% against the control group).
  • Roughly one point of CTR lost per extra point of AI Overview rate — the relationship is close to linear.
  • .fr domains: -12.3% clicks at the median. Health is the most exposed sector (22.2% AI Overview rate, -20.4% CTR).
  • 48% of domains lost more than 10% of daily clicks; 19% more than 30%; 5% more than 50%.

7. Elsewhere in AI search (August-September 2026)

  • ChatGPT Ads reached France and 30 other European markets on August 24; self-serve Ads Manager opened on August 31. Shopping placements rely on product feeds.
  • The Gemini app passed 1 billion monthly users in August.
  • Site reputation abuse: since August 30, Google no longer applies these manual actions for searchers in the European Economic Area, after European Commission scrutiny.
  • August 2026 spam update: rolled out August 18-21.
  • What assistants actually read: Wispra's first AI Barometer (September 25) finds ChatGPT sends 81.6% of assistant-referred visitors, Gemini 9.1%. Our breakdown: AI Barometer: what ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity read.

8. What to do now

  1. Treat every AI Overview query as an AI Mode query. Cover the follow-up sub-questions on the same page or in linked pages.
  2. Open the Generative AI report in Search Console and set a baseline of AI Mode impressions per page before the next change lands.
  3. Version your tests. Date, model, language, signed in or not — otherwise a model swap looks like a content win or loss.
  4. Fix your structured facts. Merchant Center for products, Business Profile for local: the agentic features read them first.
  5. French sites: compute your AI Overview exposure. On the Ahrefs curve each point costs about a point of CTR — prioritize the exposed pages where you can become the cited source.

Frequently asked questions

What's new in Google AI Mode in September 2026?
Three things. AI Overviews now expand into full AI Mode answers for some queries and some of their links open AI Mode rather than a website; AI Mode moved to Gemini 3.8 Flash for AI Pro & Ultra subscribers on September 2; and AI Mode impressions are now visible in Search Console for every website since August 31. Agentic features also grew: travel tools (August 27) and a checkout test with Flipkart in India (September 26).
Are AI Overviews turning into AI Mode?
Partly. Since August 28, 2026, for queries where Google judges a fuller answer useful, the AI Overview expands automatically into an AI Mode-style response with the follow-up box already open, pushing organic results further down. Since late September, some links inside AI Overviews also lead into an AI Mode conversation. The two surfaces are converging, so optimizing for one now means optimizing for both.
Which Gemini model powers AI Mode?
Google made Gemini 3.5 Flash the global default for AI Mode at I/O in May 2026. Newer models reach AI Pro & Ultra subscribers first, through the model menu: Gemini 3.7 Flash from mid-August, then Gemini 3.8 Flash from September 2, 2026. Because citations can change with the model, note which model answered when you test.
Can I see AI Mode traffic in Search Console?
You can see impressions, not clicks. The Generative AI performance report, available worldwide since August 31, 2026, shows how often your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. It has no clicks, no CTR and no queries yet. Clicks from AI answers still have to be inferred from analytics.
Can I opt out of AI Mode?
Yes. Search Console now has a property-level setting to block your content from AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover's AI features. Opted-out sites get no traffic or impressions from these features, but their classic Search ranking is not affected. Use of content for training is governed separately, by Google-Extended.
Is AI Mode available in France and in French?
Yes. AI Mode (Mode IA) has been live in France since July 22, 2026, natively in French, together with AI Overviews (Aperçus IA). Note that the newest models (3.7 then 3.8 Flash) launched for subscribers in English first.
Can AI Mode buy products for users in Europe?
Not yet at scale. Google's agentic checkout runs on the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) and is available to eligible US merchants, with global expansion planned through 2026. The latest test (September 26) is in India with Flipkart. No French date has been announced — but a clean Merchant Center feed is the prerequisite either way.

Machine Takeaway

In August-September 2026 Google began folding Search into AI Mode: AI Overviews expand into AI Mode answers for some queries (since August 28) and some of their links open AI Mode instead of websites (since September 21). AI Mode has over 1 billion monthly users; its default model is Gemini 3.5 Flash, with Gemini 3.7 Flash then 3.8 Flash (September 2) for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Search Console shows AI Mode impressions for all sites since August 31, 2026, without clicks or queries. In France, sites highly exposed to AI Overviews lost 23.1% of CTR within 9 days of the July 22 launch. Optimize every AI Overview query for AI Mode fan-out, version manual tests by model, and keep product and local data structured for agentic features.
